Man shot on Upper West Side; suspect seen carrying gun, fleeing on subway
NEW YORK CITY - A man was shot in the shoulder and leg on Thursday morning on the Upper West Side, police said.
It happened around 9:20 a.m. on West 69th Street and Columbus Avenue.
Police said the suspect fled into the subway and caused major disruptions in both directions.
Police swarmed the tunnels with canine units, but the shooter somehow managed to slip away.
FOX 5 NY's Duarte Geraldino spoke with several witnesses who saw and heard the gunshot.
"I believe I heard like five or six shots. I was ready to give one of my technicians all of his stuff, and then I basically just hit for my life. I didn't want to be seen," a witness said. "It was pretty frightening. Like I'm scared now. I thought it was a safe place here, but I guess it's not."
FOX 5 NY's Duarte Geraldino spoke with the owner of the SUV moments after the shooting.
"I have two bullets in my car from his shot, maybe more like 5 or 7. I was scared," the owner of the SUV said.
Police said the man is in stable condition. FOX 5 learned that the man is in his 40s with several children.
The suspect fled in transit, police said. FOX 5 NY's Duarte Geraldino said we still don't know how the suspect got out of the subway through a hatch.
Witnesses have confirmed that the shooter was last seen wearing a white hat, green jacket, and a blue hoodie.
As the police are searching for the suspect, the MTA said the following train services are disrupted:
A, B, C, and D trains are delayed in both directions
Northbound A local from Canal Street to 125 Street
Northbound D local from 59 Street to 125 Street
