Man shot while walking to car from Oakland BART station

OAKLAND — A 54-year-old Hayward man was shot Monday afternoon as he walked to his car from the West Oakland BART station, authorities said.

He was shot in the lower body and was in stable condition at a hospital.

The shooting happened about 3:30 p.m. Monday in the area of Seventh and Center streets.

Police said the man was walking to his car parked in the area when he heard numerous gunshots and people screaming. He then realized he had been shot.

    Police said a moving car was also hit by the gunfire, but the two occupants were not hurt.

    At this stage of the investigation, police believe the man and the vehicle were hit by stray bullets and were not the intended targets. However, who fired the shots and why has not yet been determined, authorities said.
