Man with gun killed by police in Winston-Salem; another man found dead in home
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — One man was shot and killed by police and another man was found dead inside a home in Winston-Salem on Sunday night, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.
At around 9:22 p.m. on Sunday, officers came to a home on the 3800 block of Queen Anne Circle after getting a report of a break-in involving a suspect who had a gun.
When police arrived at the scene, they heard gunshots from inside the home and quickly evacuated the people inside the home as more shots continued to fire.
Investigators say that as officers continued to search around the home, Michael Preston-Robinson II, 30, of Winston-Salem, exited the home with a gun. One of the responding officers then "engaged" Robinson, fatally shooting him.
Police continued to search the home for additional people and found Chrishawn Tyquese Watson, 26, of Winston-Salem, dead from a gunshot wound.
Two juveniles were also found inside the home uninjured, according to police. They were both inside of the home during the break-in and the killing of Watson.
Investigators say Robinson and one of the people living in the home knew each other.
Robinson was out on bond for several misdemeanor charges, according to police. Those charges were a probation violation, assault on a female, communicating threats and crime of domestic violence.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is independently investigating the officer-involved shooting, as is standard procedure. The officer who fatally shot Robinson will participate in a "critical incident debrief."
Police also say that the department will use resources to meet the involved officer's "emotional and mental health needs" and that "it is no small thing to take another's life, even if it is to ultimately protect others from harm."
Winston-Salem police chief William H. Penn, Jr. released the following statement:
"Understanding that the SBI will complete their own independent investigation into the Officer Involved Shooting, I cannot speak to specifics. However, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the men and women of the Winston-Salem Police Department for what they do on a daily basis. You oftentimes hear the saying that Officers are trained to run towards danger while others run away from it. I can attest that this is not a cliché statement for this agency, but rather a mindset.
