MARION, Iowa (KCRG) - A man is facing charges after police said eleven animals were rescued from filthy conditions at his Marion home.

Marion police said they were called to the home of John Wheeler, located in the 200 block of 5th Avenue, on September 16.

There were seven cats and four dogs living there with Wheeler.

The home was found to be covered in feces and urine, such that it was declared unsafe for both humans and animals to be living in it.

Cedar Valley Humane Society examined the animals and found the four dogs to be injured. Two of them were emaciated and had scabs on their bodies. The other two dogs had skin issues, including scabs and lesions, police said.

The seven cats had fleas and were also in unhealthy condition.

John Wheeler is charged with four counts of Animal Neglect with Injury and seven counts of Animal Neglect with no injury.
