Mark Ingram loses New Orleans Saints rushing record

Mark Ingram knew Alvin Kamara would break his franchise record for career rushing yards with the New Orleans Saints. But the former Alabama All-American thought the one-time Crimson Tide prospect would have done so before Sunday. "Just what he's been able to accomplish throughout his career, how he's grown as a man, as a player, as a leader, I'm just super happy for him," Ingram told WWL-AM in New Orleans last week. "All records are meant to be broken, and I'm just surprised it took him this long to do it." In 123 games with the Saints, Ingram ran for 6,500 yards and 52 touchdowns on 1,451 carries. After running for 55 yards on 17 carries in a 20-17 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Kamara lifted his rushing total to 6,544 yards and 60 touchdowns on 1,482 carries to take the record from his former teammate. Ingram had held the franchise record since Nov. 21, 2021 , when he surpassed the 6,096 rushing yards gained by Deuce McAllister for the Saints from 2001 through 2008. Ingram came to New Orleans as a first-round selection in the 2011 NFL Draft. In 2017, Kamara joined him in the Saints' backfield as a third-round selection from Tennessee. In Kamara's rookie season, they became the first running-back duo to record 1,500 yards from scrimmage apiece in the same campaign, earning the nickname of Boom and Zoom. Ingram and Kamara were New Orleans teammates in 2017 and 2018. Ingram returned to the Saints during the 2021 season and played for New Orleans through his final game in 2022. Ingram was an All-American, Heisman Trophy winner and national champion at Alabama during his three seasons with the Crimson Tide. Kamara spent a redshirt season at Alabama in 2013 before leaving for Hutchinson Community College and completing his college career with two seasons at Tennessee.
