Marvel: More ‘Daredevil’ Seasons, More Punisher, More Jessica Jones
The Defenders corner of the MCU has always been in a strange place, with the Netflix series licensed before Disney Plus existed. They were technically in the MCU, but with zero real connection to it, and they were all summarily cancelled and removed from Netflix once their deal expired and Disney Plus was taking shape.
Well, times change. Significantly, it turns out.
We know that at long last, Matt Murdock will return as Daredevil in the "Born Again" revival of the show which premieres on March 20, 2025. But Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum is indicating that this is only the start of grand Defenders revival plans:
He says he can see Daredevil Born Again going on for multiple seasons past what is planned. This seems to align with recent statements that Marvel wants to design more TV shows to run for multiple seasons rather than just be miniseries or things leading into other movies.
He says that there are plans for Daredevil to appear in the MCU outside of his series. Previously, star Charlie Cox has said that the MCU character he'd love to work with is Tom Holland's Spider-Man, with he and Daredevil obviously having a long comic history. We know Holland will return in a fourth Spider-Man film, but it's unclear if it would be "street level" or something on the more cosmic level of the current MCU plotlines. It's also possible Daredevil could appear in either of the upcoming Avengers films.
He says that there is "100%" a future for Jon Bernthal's Punisher in the MCU after his supporting role in Daredevil Born Again. Bernthal has become a hugely sought-after quantity in Hollywood the last few years, so it's no great surprise Marvel would want to keep him around. Marvel has also now allowed the MCU to get a lot more bloody than before with the arrival of something like Daredevil and Wolverine which became one of the universe's most successful movies ever, despite its R-rating.
Winderbaum was asked which Defenders character he'd like to see get a new season in the MCU and he said Jessica Jones. Given that he is the head of Marvel TV and the guy to make that happen, it seems likely that Krysten Ritter, who has always expressed an interest in returning, may indeed come back for more seasons of her old show. There are theories she may have a cameo in Born Again too.
You get the idea. The old Netflix Defenders are being re-embraced by Marvel now, a big switch from how they used to be treated. We do not have any indications about Luke Cage, Iron Fist or Colleen Wing returning, but perhaps they could be in the cards as well.
