Memorial for Officer Austin Machitar Set for Saturday, with Procession Along I-8

The funeral procession for San Diego police Officer Austin Machitar will move from Interstate 805 to Greenfield Drive in El Cajon early Saturday.

Motorists should expect delays traveling on eastbound Interstate 8 from 7:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. along the route.

The procession will also affect the following ramps:

  • Eastbound I-8 at Interstate 15
  • Southbound I-15 to eastbound/westbound I-8
  • Northbound I-15 to eastbound I-8
  • Eastbound I-8 off-ramp to Mission Gorge Road/Fairmount Avenue
  • Southbound state Route 125 to eastbound I-8
  • Northbound SR-125 to eastbound I-8
  • Southbound state Route 67 to eastbound I-8
  • Police will establish a staging area at Snapdragon Stadium, with the procession for the 10 a.m. service exiting the west gate onto eastbound Friars Road before taking the onramp to the freeway.

    Law enforcement and Caltrans crews will continue the procession on eastbound I-8 at I-805 and stop all traffic. The procession will move slowly along eastbound I-8 to Shadow Mountain Church on Greenfield Drive in El Cajon.

    There will be several overpasses along the route where the community may view the procession and pay their respects.

    Motorists may follow the procession but are encouraged to take alternate routes. No vehicles will be allowed to enter or pass the procession. All lanes will reopen as it moves east.

    The memorial will be live-streamed from the church's video system .
