Michigan State depth chart, injury report: WR, OL uncertainty heading to Boston College

N.Adams2 hr ago
The depth chart Michigan State took into the season now looks significantly different.

Injuries each week – including a half-dozen long term – leave the Spartans (3-0, 1-0 Big Ten) shorthanded in all three phases heading into Saturday's matchup (8 p.m., ACC Network) at Boston College (2-1, 1-0 ACC) to close non-conference play.

The latest loss for Michigan State is starting right guard Gavin Broscious, who is likely done for the year due to an apparent lower left leg injury suffered in last week's 40-0 win against Prairie View A&M. Broscious moved to the top of the depth chart after starter Kristian Phillips suffered a season-ending leg injury in the opener.

At safety, Khalil Majeed is officially out for the season and Dillon Tatum isn't going to be available anytime soon. Cornerback Chance Rucker will be out for at least another month, it's unclear when receiver Alante Brown will be healthy enough to return and defensive end Avery Dunn missed all three games. Starting receiver Jaron Glover was unavailable last week but coach Jonathan Smith said he was optimistic about him returning on Saturday.

Here's a projection of Michigan State's depth chart heading the game at Boston College:

Starter: Aidan Chiles

Backup: Tommy Schuster

Others of note: Alessio Milivojevic, Ryland Jessee

Chiles turned in his first turnover-free performance while throwing for a score and rushing for another before getting his first breather of the season last week. Schuster made his Michigan State debut and looked every bit the veteran graduate transfer who broke passing records at North Dakota. He completed his first six pass attempts and finished 8-for-10 for 97 yards with a rushing touchdown.

Running back

Starter: Nathan Carter

Backup: Kay'Ron Lynch-Adams

Others of note: Brandon Tullis, Makhi Frazier

The touches favored Lynch-Adams last week for the first time this season with 15 carries for 63 yards while starter Nathan Carter posted eight attempts for 91 yards with 60 of those coming on a second-quarter touchdown. Tullis and Frazier, both true freshmen, got their first carries for the Spartans.

Starter: Jay Coyne

Backup: Tyneil Hopper

Coyne posted his first career touch last week on a 12-yard reception while Hopper, a seventh-year senior tight end, made his H-back debut and helped spring Carter's 60-yard touchdown run.

Wide receiver

Starters: Montorie Foster, Jaron Glover, Nick Marsh

Backups: Aziah Johnson, Antonio Gates Jr.

Others of note: Jaelen Smith, Jack Yanachik, Zach Gillespie, Jaylan Brown, Austin Clay

We'll see if Glover is ready to go while Marsh went to the sideline limping early last week before returning to play. Johnson had an impressive 17-yard touchdown catch – the first score of his career – catching a slant and running through contact across the goal line. The redshirt freshman also added a 33-yard grab while Antonio Gates Jr. had three catches for 42 yards.

Tight end

Starters: Jack Velling, Michael Masunas

Backups: Brennan Parachek, Ademola Faleye

Others of note: Tyneil Hopper, Jaxson Wilson

The Spartans went real deep at tight end early last week and showed some new wrinkles at the position. Velling's 42 yards on two catches were a season-high while Masunas and Parachek each had a grab.

Offensive line

Starters: LT Brandon Baldwin, LG Luke Newman, C Tanner Miller, RG Dallas Fincher, RT Ashton Lepo

Backup: Stanton Ramil, Cooper Terpstra, Rakeem Johnson

Others of note: Andrew Dennis, Charlton Luniewski, Jacob Merritt

Ramil continues to push Baldwin for the top spot at left tackle while Fincher was already splitting snaps at right guard and played the rest of the way last week after Broscious was injured. It's unclear who is next up at right guard but a pair of walk-ons were the backups last week as Merritt replaced Newman late at left guard while Terpstra took over for Miller at center. Johnson made his college debut at right tackle and Smith mentioned the true freshman as one who could potentially slide in at guard if needed.

Defensive tackle

Starters: D'Quan Douse, Alex VanSumeren

Backups: Maverick Hansen, Jalen Satchell, Ben Roberts, Ru'Quan Buckley

Others of note: Mikeshun Beeler

The Spartans continue to rotate heavily up front while mixing up looks. Beeler, a true freshman, made his Spartan debut last week and had one tackle.

Defensive end

Starters: Khris Bogle, Jalen Thompson

Backups: Anthony Jones, Ken Talley, Quindarius Dunnigan

Others of note: James Schott, Kekai Burnett, Avery Dunn, Tyler Gillison

Bogle leads the team with 2.5 sacks while Talley picked up one on the first third-down stop of the game last week. As is the case in the middle, the Spartans have regularly gone deep at end.

Starters: Cal Haladay, Jordan Turner

Backups: Jordan Hall, Wayne Matthews, Darius Snow

Also of note: Marcellius Pulliam, Brady Pretzlaff, Sam Edwards, Stone Chaney, Aaron Alexander, Semaj Bridgeman

Turner and Haladay remain the starters and combined for 11 tackles and two sacks last week but the group is frequently rotated. Pretzlaff, a true freshman, earned his first snaps and had a tackle for loss.

Starters: Charles Brantley, Ed Woods

Backups: Jeremiah Hughes, Ade Willie

Others of note: Andrew Brinson

Brantley had an interception return for a touchdown wiped out by a penalty before taking a pick-6 back 100 yards for a score later on the same possession. That set a record for the longest defensive play in program history. Woods had five tackles but gave up three catches on four targets while Hughes and Willie were the first subs in.

Safety/nickelback

Starters: Malik Spencer, Nikai Martinez, Angelo Grose

Backups: Armorion Smith, Aveon Grose

Others of note: Justin Denson, Lejond Cavazos

Smith was available for the first time this season after dealing with the death of his mother and helped block for Brantley on his 100-yard return. True freshman Justin Denson played for the first time late.

Special teams

PK/KO: Jonathan Kim

Ryan Eckley

LS: Kaden Schickel

PR: Montorie Foster

KR: Kay'Ron Lynch-Adams

Although Kim missed an extra point, he made a pair of short field goals to improve to 4-for-4 this season and continues to boot the ball out of the end zone. Eckley's lone punt went for 55 yards and Foster had a 24-yard punt return. Tarik Ahmetbasic made his debut as the backup with an extra point and pair of kickoffs.
