Marietta Police Chief David Beam announced the news of Miele's death shortly after 3 p.m. via social media but did not release further details.
"I want to pass on our sympathy to the family and loved ones of Mrs. Miele. In Mrs. Miele, we saw our own mothers and grandmothers, and we wanted nothing more than to find her safely and return her to you. While that wasn't the outcome, know that our efforts were genuine, thorough, and led by a servant's heart. You will be in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," Beam said in a Facebook post.
Community members rallied together to search for Miele, who police said was considered at risk. Police said she disappeared around 11 p.m. Friday from Greenwood Assisted Living and Memory Care facility in the 1100 block of Whitlock Avenue in Marietta.
The search included the use of police K9s, drones and the Georgia State Patrol helicopter, police said. Police also asked residents to check their outdoor cameras for any possible sightings of Miele.
"While the outcome of this incident was not what we had all hoped for, I wanted to take a minute to thank those who stepped forward to help search for Mrs. Miele. To the officers and staff of the Marietta Police Department, Marietta Fire Department and the numerous other public safety agencies who assisted with the search, the hundreds of hours you put forward over the last three days speak to your level of professionalism. I consider all of you heroes," Beam said.
"I also want to thank the Marietta community members who came together for Mrs. Miele. Whether you shared information about her disappearance or actually spent time looking for her, you are what makes Marietta so special. You love the Marietta community, and it shows. The men and women of the Marietta Police Department are proud of you and embrace the partnership we share. We could never carry out our duties to the high level that we do without the community's support and partnership. Please keep Mrs. Miele's family and friends in your prayers during this difficult time."
