Missoula School Threats: Police Actions and Safety Measures

Missoula, MT ( KGVO-AM News ) - On September 18, 2024, the Missoula Police Department was made aware of a potential threat involving Hellgate High School, which surfaced through a social media platform. According to Police Public Information Officer Whitney Bennett, the threat indicated a school shooting may occur following an evacuation triggered by a fire alarm.

"Based on our investigation and information gathered, we do not believe this threat to be credible," Bennett said. "It appears to be linked to a series of nationwide threats circulating across social media, with various schools being mentioned. Out of an abundance of caution, we have deployed multiple officers to Hellgate High School to ensure the continued safety and security of all students and staff. The school is operating as usual, and we will maintain an active presence on campus as we continue to monitor the situation."

On September 20, 2024, Bennett said MPD was made aware of another unrelated threat of violence directed at Missoula County Public Schools.

"Suspects have been identified in both incidents, and investigations are currently ongoing," Bennett said. "While no one is in custody at this time, MPD has implemented active measures to ensure the safety of all MCPS schools. This includes an increased presence of Law Enforcement Officers and additional patrols around school campuses. Based on the information gathered, we do not believe there is an active threat to MCPS or the public at this time."

Bennett said MPD understands the concern that recent events have caused among students, parents, and school staff. MPD wants to remind the community of the critical role they play in school safety.

"We want to assure the community that the safety of our schools is of utmost importance, and we are taking these matters very seriously," Bennett said. "We encourage anyone who may have information regarding unsafe behavior or who observes suspicious activity to contact law enforcement immediately. If you see something, say something. Your vigilance plays a critical role in helping us keep our community secure."
