Modern Love, a vegan restaurant in midtown Omaha, is closing next year

The operators of Modern Love vegan restaurant — which is closing — say their goal is to open a smaller concept restaurant that "gets us back to our roots" sometime in the future.

They commented on Facebook recently, announcing that the popular vegan restaurant in Midtown Crossing will close for good next summer. Owners say they won't renew the lease to the eatery, at 3157 Farnam St. Suite 7133, in Midtown Crossing, when it expires.

Chef and cookbook author Isa Chandra Moskowitz opened the restaurant in August 2014 next door to O'Leaver's Pub on South 50th Street and Saddle Creek Road. It moved to the former Chicago Dawg House location in Midtown Crossing in 2018.

Moskowitz, a New York City native, opened another Modern Love in Brooklyn in 2016 and it remains open.

Modern Love is one of a few restaurants in Omaha that offer varied vegan dishes. The menu includes items such as Fettuccine Caulifredo, with creamy garlic sauce, pasta, a crispy cauliflower cutlet, cashew mozzarella and pepita parmesan; chickpea cutlet parmesan, a meatless version of veal parmesan; and a variety of shakes made with cashew-based ice cream, among many other vegan offerings.

In the Facebook post, they encouraged patrons to continue eating there regularly in the coming months to help them achieve their goal to open at another site.

"Now's not the time to be sad," they said. "It's time to eat your weight in Mac & Shews (macaroni and cheese made with cashews) and celebrate the past 10+ years."
