Movies, music, open mic and more scheduled at the Dietrich Theater

Are you on the lookout for fun activities that you and your family can enjoy this spring? If you answered “yes,” the Dietrich theater has a couple of offerings you do not want to miss.

We invite you and your friends and family to join us for a free movie at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 2. See “Shrek” on the big screen at the Dietrich. What a fun movie for all ages to enjoy. In addition to free admission, we will provide free popcorn and soda.

You can’t beat that.

This movie is sponsored in memory of “Jeeterbug” from the Kintner Family. Tickets can be reserved by calling the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 and will be available at the door as long as they last. We hope to see you there.

The Dietrich will host a Family a Sing-Along with singer/songwriter Kj at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 9.

According to Kj, you will experience “Music to feed the soul, the mind and the body with crazy, fun and entertaining words and movements!”

This event is geared for all ages. Admission is free. We would like to thank Toni Hockman for underwriting the event. Kj has performed at previous Gathering of Singers and Songwriters concerts. She has an amazing voice and an inspiring message. Tickets are not required. Just show up.

We will also offer more live entertainment for teens and adults over the next few weeks.

Come out to Open Mic Night at 7 p.m. this Friday, April 24. Whether you wish to perform or be a member of the audience (like me), join us for a variety of live acts from poetry to music to storytelling to comedy. After the open mic portion of the evening, musician Corky Staats will take the stage to perform songs from his recent project “Mountain Memories,” a collection of songs that he wrote about outdoor and camping experiences he’s had over the years. This will be Corky’s second time performing at Open Mic. He not only is a great singer, but a great storyteller, as well.

Doors open for seating and sign-ups at 6:30 p.m. For more information about Open Mic Night, call the Dietrich.

Then on Sunday, May 3, the theater will go on the road to WVIA Studios in Pittston. We are collaborating with WVIA to bring you “Unforgettable...The Music of Nat ‘King’ Cole.” Penn State Professor Philip Mosley and Poconos jazz musician Dennis Jeter and his band will share with us Nat “King” Cole’s life story and music.

Don’t miss the taping of this delightful program as it is recorded for later broadcast. A light reception will follow the show. The concert starts at 3 p.m. at WVIA and you can either drive yourself or take free bus transportation from the Dietrich Theater. The bus will depart the Dietrich at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free thanks to the generosity of First Energy Foundation, Jean Mieczkowski and the Tunkhannock Rotary Club. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the Dietrich Theater.

Oh, and I also wanted to remind you that we have one more week of festival to go. I have seen seven films so far, and they are so good. I would definitely recommend “The Imitation Game,” “Big Eyes,” “Still Alice,” “The Theory of Everything” and “Cake.” They were all such powerful films with amazing performances.

For a full schedule of all of our festival movies, visit dietrichtheater.com.

As you can see, the Dietrich is so much more than the movies.
