Summer brings children’s camps to the Dietrich Theater
With the end of the school year just around the corner, I am sure many parents are looking for fun and educational activities for their kids this summer. If that is the case for you, read on, because the Dietrich Theater is presenting a variety of camps this summer.
Visual arts, theater, technology, movie making, dance and more will abound at the Dietrich.
We will start things off this summer with a few classes taught by Rand Whipple of Box of Light Studios. They include Minecraft Film Camp, LEGO Maniacs and Robotics camps. In Minecraft Film Camp, students ages 7-14 years old will make movies using Minecraft. They will conceive and plan their films, create their digital world in Minecraft and then add sound to their masterpieces.
Our first week of Minecraft Camp is already full, so we added a second week, scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. June 29 to July 3. Admission is $60. To sign up, call 570-996-1500.
We also added another LEGO Maniacs Camp that week, due to its popularity. In this camp students will build with LEGOs, film and then build some more as they create LEGO animated films. Students will learn the basics of stop action animation as the shoot, edit and add cool special effects to their films. Classes will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. Admission is $60. To register, call the Dietrich.
Robotics Camp will also be taught by Rand Whipple that week. In this camp, students will create robots and will learn how to make them move, talk, complete tasks and more. Robotics will be offered from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Call the Dietrich for more information or to sign up.
Then in July, Amy Colley and Michaela Moore will be back for two theatre and visual arts camps. These are always a highlight of the summer.
In Hidden Treasures! Theatre and Visual Arts Camp, students ages 5-12 will use their imaginations to find lost treasures. Will your camper find a priceless diamond? Or dig up a newly discovered dinosaur? Find out during this fun and adventurous week. Campers will spend the week becoming treasure hunting characters of their choice as they make costumes, props, a set and a play. The week will end with an original, casual performance for family and friends.
Hidden Treasures! Theatre and Visual Arts Camp will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, July 6 to 10. Admission is $60.
The second theatre and visual arts camp of the summer will be held during the week of July 20 through July 24 and will focus on heroes.
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes and can be found in the most unusual places. Kids are invited to come to this camp and find out who their inner hero will be. It will be filled with fun art projects and exciting theatre games as campers create their own heroic characters, costumes, props, a set and a play that is all about heroism. They will perform their original production for family and friends at the week’s end. Admission is $60. Call the Dietrich to register.
We also will offer visual arts camps with Steve Colley. This summer he is teaching the ever-popular Pottery for Kids and the zany Trash to Treasures series.

As you can see, the Dietrich is so much more than the movies!
