Much of region remains under wildfire threat

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) - Many areas in our region remain at risk for wildfires.

Officials say southern parts of the state missed a lot of the rain this past summer, leading to two-thirds of the state currently listed in drought conditions.

"These drought conditions, combined with above average temperatures, have led to very dry fuels. This includes an abundance of dead leaves and grass as well as heavier forest fuel, such as dead trees and limbs that are normally wet this time of year," said Vermont Forest Commissioner Danielle Fitzko.

Officials say most wildfires are caused by humans and they urge the public to follow burn bans, be careful with any open flames, and make sure to properly dispose of wood stove ash.

Meanwhile, crews in Brattleboro responded Wednesday to another fire that burned about five acres before being put out. They remain on scene to monitor hot spots.
