Colin J. Sinatro of West Pittston has been placed on the 2004 Patriot
League Swimming & Diving Academic Honor Roll for the spring semester at
Lafayette College. Sinatro is studying at the University of Western Australia
as a participant in Lafayette College’s semester-long study-abroad program.

Sheldon Hartman of Wilkes-Barre was inducted into the Golden Key Honor
Society at the University of Southern Maine. Hartman is a 1977 graduate of
Pompano Beach Senior High School and the son of Dale and Ruth Hartman.
Nicholas Brozowski of Wilkes-Barre Township was awarded a full-tuition
scholarship by the Kosciuszko Foundation to study at Jagiellonian University
in Krakow, Poland. Brozowski will spend the academic year at Jagiellonian
University’s Institute of Polish Diaspora and Ethnic Studies, where he will
have the opportunity to study Polish language, history and literature.

Chris Clemente, a senior at St. Joseph’s University, was one of three St.
Joseph’s students pictured in Time magazine’s Aug. 9 issue. Clemente helped
his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, raise money for the Ronald McDonald House
in Philadelphia through a “jail and bail” fund-raiser. He is a 2001 graduate
of Bishop O’Reilly High School and son of Pat and Kate Clemente, Kingston.

Jessica A. Holton and Renee A. Crane of Dallas were named to the dean’s
list for the spring semester at Cedar Crest College.

Erica Zerfoss, a biomedical engineering student in the Schreyer Honors
College at Penn State University, is completing an internship in the Pediatric
Oncology Education Program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in
Memphis, Tenn. Her research project involves stem-cell transplantations.
Zerfoss is a 2001 graduate of Greater Nanticoke Area High School and daughter
of Alan and Janice Zerfoss.

Dr. Susan Ashton earned a doctor of medicine degree at the University of
Pittsburgh School of Medicine and will complete a family practice residency at
Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital, Columbia, S.C. Ashton is a 2000 magna cum
laude graduate of Bryn Mawr College and a graduate of Hanover Area High
School. She is daughter of Robert W. and Mary Ann Ashton of Hanover Township.

Mallory Sowcik was named to the dean’s list for the fall and spring
semesters at Rosemont College, Philadelphia. Sowcik, a biology major on a full
academic scholarship, has also been elected to the student government and will
serve as secretary/treasurer of her class. She is a graduate of Bishop
O’Reilly High School, Kingston, and daughter of Luke and Donna Sowcik of
Edwardsville.

Nicole Sheets of Mountain Top was selected to attend Washington and Lee
University’s Summer Scholars Program. Sheets is daughter of Robert and Lita
Sheets of Mountain Top.

Karleigh Bowen was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at East
Stroudsburg University. Bowen is a 2003 graduate of Wyoming Valley West High
School and daughter of Carl and Deborah Bowen of Forty Fort.

Christine M. Jordan graduated from The Widener University School of Law in
Wilmington, Del., with a juris doctor degree in law. Jordan graduated cum
laude in 2000 from King’s College and is a daughter of Elaine (Butcher) and
Edward Jordan of Wilkes-Barre. She plans to continue her legal career in
Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Jason Maskinas, a 2004 graduate of Crestwood High School, earned a
Presidential Scholarship from Widener University in Chester. Maskinas will
attend the school in the fall as a mechanical engineering major. He is son of
Gerard and Ann Marie Maskinas of Nuangola.

Lisa Marie Gongleski of Dallas has been named to the dean’s list for the
spring quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology. Gongleski is a 2001
graduate of Lake-Lehman High School and daughter of Marjorie A. Handley
Gongleski and Edmund P. Gongleski of Dallas.

Melissa Beretski of West Wyoming will study at Konan University in Kobe,
Japan, during the upcoming academic year. Beretski, who completed her
sophomore year at the University of Pittsburgh, has been awarded multiple
scholarships, including one from the Japanese Ministry of Education. She is
daughter of David Beretski of West Wyoming and Lee Ann Beretski of Duryea.

Ann Barrett of Hazleton was named to The Crusader student newspaper
editorial board at Susquehanna University. Barrett will serve as advertising
manager. She is a 2002 graduate of Bishop Hafey Junior-Senior High School and
daughter of Richard and Mary Jo Barrett.

Dr. Maria A. Turkson presented her research at the 2004 American
Psychological Association Conference in Honolulu. Turkson’s work has been
published in scientific journals, and she has won several national awards. She
is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, where she earned a
doctorate of philosophy degree in counseling psychology; King’s College; and
Pittston Area High School. Turkson is daughter of Sally and Paul Turkson of
Pittston.

Jill Sands of Shavertown is participating in the Research Partners program
at Susquehanna University. She and professor of Biology Jack Holt are studying
whether the Island Biogeography theory applies to diatom populations in Penns
Creek, Snyder County. Sands is a 2001 graduate of Lake-Lehman High School and
daughter of Allen and Carol Sands of Shavertown.

Bryan Wagner has been awarded a full-tuition assistantship at Villanova
University, where he will pursue a master’s degree in computer science. Wagner
graduated summa cum laude in May from King’s College and in 2000 from Bishop
O’Reilly High School. He is son of Bill and Joan Wagner of Shavertown.

Carrie A. Kaufman of Wilkes-Barre was named to the dean’s list at West
Chester University. Kaufman is a graduate of Meyers High School and daughter
of Marcia and Mark Kaufman.

Colleen M. Smith of Kingston was named to the dean’s list for the spring
semester at St. Bonaventure University. Smith is daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Smith.

Paul R. Swiderski of Trucksville graduated from the University of Phoenix
with a master of business administration degree in accounting.

Dr. Roy Walter Gernhardt III of Mountain Top graduated with a doctor of
medicine degree from St. George’s University, School of Medicine. Gernhardt
will conduct his residency in family practice at Wyoming Valley Health Care
System, Kingston. He is son of Roy and Marlene Gernhardt and husband of Marya
A. Gernhardt.

Jason Austin of Kingston has been accepted to Lycoming College for the fall
semester. Austin is receiving a music scholarship and an academic scholarship
from the school. He is son of David and Susan Austin.
