Nashville celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15 – Oct. 15

NASHVILLE, Tenn (WKRN) — Nashville is joining cities across America in a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month . The Observance started Sept. 15 and ends Oct. 15.

According to Visit Music City, President Lyndon B. Johnson started the observation in 1968. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded the observance to cover a 30-day period. The law was enacted on Aug. 17, 1988.

Hispanic Heritage Month events happening in Nashville

Metro Nashville has a diverse community of Hispanics and Latin Americans. In the next 15 years, the Latino population is expected to grow above 30%. Currently, the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce estimates the city's current Latino population at 11% and statewide at 7%.

Among the many Hispanic businesses is Las Americas Restaurant. The restaurant is located along Nolensville Road. It features a variety of different Latin American foods. The owner started the restaurant after immigrating from Mexico City.

Along with his wife Maria, Gerardo Gomez created a business that he wants to pass down to his children.

"I remember when my daughter was 8 years old and she was helping at the restaurant and now she's continuing to work with her mother," Gomez said.
