NEW CANAAN, CT — With daylight savings time in full effect this week, many New Canaan residents are asked to be extra cautious while walking or driving home in the dark, according to police.

In a Facebook post , police offered the following safety tips for residents as it gets dark in town earlier:

  • Pedestrians and bicyclists should wear reflective clothing, carry a flashlight, walk in well-lit areas and be aware of oncoming traffic.
  • When we fall back, afternoon commutes may be impacted as many will be traveling home in the twilight hours.
  • Please remember to use your headlights as soon as it begins to get dark and always watch for people and bikes.
  • New Canaan police encourage all drivers and pedestrians to be more attentive during the darker early evening hours.

"Regardless of the season," police said on Facebook, "distracted driving is a leading cause of vehicle crashes."
