New 'creepy' feature coming to Kmart Australia leaves shoppers 'freaked out': 'There's no way'

Kmart Australia has 'freaked out' hundreds of shoppers by introducing a major change to selected stores.

A Melbourne shopper noticed the department store in Westfield Southland had installed a digital sign in the change rooms to detect the products being tried on.

At the time the customer was confused by the new technology and shared an image on Reddit of the screen in question, which displayed images of the clothing identified.

'Kmart is now able to detect the clothes you try on,' the caption read.

The post quickly caught the attention of paranoid shoppers who instantly disapproved of the screens.

'Do you have to scan them or does this happen automatically? I don't want anything scanning my a** in a change room,' one wrote.

'My paranoid ass would've freaked the f**** out,' another said.

However, some pointed out shoppers have nothing to worry about as no cameras are used.

'This is pretty common stuff around the world, they just have RFID tags on them, and when you enter the room those tags are scanned. RFID doesn't need a camera or anything, so they're not looking at you, it's basically just an advanced barcode,' one wrote.

'Uniqlo stores here have that as well,' another said.

The latest technology detects products brought into the fitting rooms by scanning the barcodes.

A Kmart Australia spokesperson told FEMAIL only one store is trialling the new technology.

'Kmart Southland is currently participating in a new trial of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology in our fitting rooms, that scans our apparel products upon entry, and then displays these products to the customer,' the spokesperson said.

'There are no cameras or photographs utilised with this technology.

'RFID technology is used globally and not new to Kmart, as it is already used in other areas of our stores including with our Tory robot, which uses RFID technology to count our inventory daily and improve the shopping experience for our customers.'
