GETTING THERE; Millions in roadwork planned in Stafford

C.Kim29 min ago

Stafford County has a lot of road projects in the pipeline, nine to be exact, according to a recent update by the county.

Work has started on some of the projects, such as the $12.5 million Berea Church Road improvements from U.S. 17 to Truslow Road. Other projects are still in the design phase and won't start for several years.

Two upcoming projects, however, are among the biggest and are relatively close to starting.

The biggest and most expensive project focuses on U.S. 1 at the Courthouse Road area.

According to the county, the $26.7 million project is scheduled to start next summer.

The plans call for widening U.S. 1, to allow for the addition of a raised concrete median and to add turn lanes at the intersection of Courthouse Road and the nearby intersection at Bells Hill Road/Hope Road. Eastbound Courthouse Road also will be widened to add dedicated right and left turn lanes to go along with a through lane. A sidewalk will be added along Route 1.

Work on the other big project, also on U.S. 1, is expected to start in the spring.

The $12.5 million project calls for the realignment of U.S. 1 and Telegraph Road and the installation of a permanent traffic signal, along with changes to Woodstock Lane that will eliminate left turns onto southbound U.S. 1.

A full list of the projects can be found on Stafford's website .

Comments sought on planned city intersection changes

Planners are looking for comments on proposed upgrades to a longtime, and awkward, intersection along U.S. 1, at Allman's Bar-B-Que in front of the Eagle Village shopping center.

The project calls for numerous changes to the Augustine Avenue and nearby spots, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Changes include adding a right-turn lane on southbound U.S. 1 to Augustine Avenue and adjustments to the concrete curbing and islands.

The plans also call for the removal of the service road from Eagle Village Drive to Augustine Avenue. Sidewalks and pedestrian ramps also would be added around the intersection.

Changes also are planned for the other side of U.S. 1, with the plans calling for the elimination of right turns onto U.S. 1 from Augustine Avenue.

A public hearing on the proposal was held last week. For those who didn't make it to the hearing, there are ways to offer your opinion on the plans.

VDOT offers an online survey ( ) concerning the project.

Comments also can be sent by email to or by mail to Mr. Elyas Jalalzai, VDOT Project Manager, 87 Deacon Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22405.

Additional materials on the project, including impacts to properties and an environmental review, can be viewed at the Deacon Road VDOT office.

Comments on the project must be received by Saturday.
