COLUMBIA, Tenn. (WKRN) — City officials in Columbia have cut the ribbon on new charging stations, marking a big boost for those driving electric and hybrid vehicles in the city.

The statewide push to support more electric vehicles took a big step forward in Maury County on Monday, Sept. 23. City officials described the installation as "historic."

The fast-charging stations are located in the Maury County Parking Lot at the corner of Woodland and East 7th Streets. Mayor Chaz Molder told News 2 that he's proud people can come to the city and get a fast charge for their EVs.

"I'm so proud to celebrate the fact that you can come to Columbia, Tennessee and get a fast charge for your electric vehicle. We know that electric vehicles are the wave of the future," said Molder. "General Motors, who happens to have a large presence in our county, the chairman and CEO has announced that she wants to be fully EV by the year 2035. So, we can't do that unless we have fast charging stations across the country."

The project was funded by a grant from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the Department of Environmental Conservation, which share a common goal of getting a statewide EV fast-charging network.

Mayor Chaz Molder said the network is aiming to limit range anxiety, provide lower fuel costs and increase tourism for residents.

"In addition to allowing our local residents who have EVs, this also puts Columbia on the map for others who may be in the area, traveling north, south, east or west, who need an EV charge now they can come to Columbia, set their car up, go have lunch at one of our many restaurants, go shop and then come back and get in their car and go about their way," said Molder.

According to Drive Electric Tennessee , there are nearly 400 battery electric and plug-in electric vehicles in Maury County, and just under 42,000 across the state.
