New program provides shoes, boots to children
Kicks 4 Kindness is an innovative program that is administrated through Barbershop and Social Services in Rochester.
The mission is to tackle one of the most visible signs of poverty by providing new tennis shoes and boots to children in the community. Program leaders, including founder of The Barbershop and Social Services and Sports Mentorship Academy Rev. Andre Crockett, believe that all children deserve a new pair of shoes. Crockett's upbringing in impoverished Baltimore inspired the creation of Kicks 4 Kindness after his own experience wearing worn-out hand-me-downs and shoes with holes in the bottom, using cardboard to cover the holes.
Individuals and businesses can contribute funds to Kicks 4 Kindness through one-time or recurring donations.
Kicks 4 Kindness collaborates with trusted local organizations, schools and community centers who have a direct connection with families facing financial hardships.
Shoes are distributed directly through local partners, who make sure each pair reaches the children who will benefit most.
One in nine children in Minnesota live in poverty. New shoes can do so many things for a child living in poverty. It is a simple solution that can have a lasting impact on their everyday lives.
By receiving a new pair of shoes, Barbershop and Social Services has found that it has a strong, positive impact on their overall mental and physical health. School attendance, self-esteem and behavior improve. Physical activity and participation in sports increase as well.
A new pair of shoes will allow all children to feel valued and help them to reach their highest potential. Crockett's motto is "when you look good, you feel good."
