New York Yankees vs Cincinnati Reds: Marcus Stroman vs. Frankie Montas

T.Johnson1 days ago
The Yankees have lost both games in this series against the under-.500 Reds, both by a single run while waiting for that one big hit. It hasn't come in this series, and while the Yankees will already be walking away with a disappointing outcome, but they can get some catharsis in the series finale against an ex-Yankee.

Frankie Montas gave the Yankees all of 41 innings across parts of two seasons and they weren't very good. His 72.1 innings for the Reds haven't been all that great either, boasting a 4.23 ERA and 4.44 FIP (both middling at best). His strikeout and walk rates are near-career-worsts, and knocking him around the park might only be worth one win, but boy it would feel good.

Marcus Stroman counters for the Yankees, looking to get back on the horse after a bad June. Like all the Yankee starters, the right-hander hit a patch of regression in the season's third month, with a 5.13 ERA across five starts. Stroman is always going to be a guy who outpitches his FIP, but he fell a bit too in love with contact and that's not always friendly for a pitcher, even an established sinkerballer like Stro.

We get a change atop the lineup, with Ben Rice leading off ahead of twin All-Stars Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. This has been a long time coming, with new six-hitter Anthony Volpe slashing .219/.239/.311 since Memorial Day (and not much better since mid-April honestly). The Yankees' issue has mostly been how bad the starters have been lately, but a .239 OBP atop the order has left a lot of runs on the table. Hopefully Rice can get the Yankees off on the right foot.
