Normal Communty's Davis, Niekamp selected as Big 12 Conference top players
Normal Community High School’s Tommy Davis has been selected Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Year, while teammate Dexter Niekamp has been named Defensive Player of the Year.
Davis was a first team performer along with teammate Kyle Beaty and Bloomington’s AJ Codron at backs (combining running backs and quarterbacks).
Other first team offensive players from the area were NCHS linemen Mac Brennan and Quinn Butler, receiver Mar’Quan Gary and tight end Alex Binion, Normal West lineman Ben Jorczak and receivers Sencerre Brown and Gavin Camp and BHS receiver Garrick Dickerson.
Joining Niekamp as defensive line first team picks were Miguel Espindola of BHS, Gustav Schreiber of West and AJ Montoya of NCHS.
Among the first team linebackers were Brady Augstin and Cooper Caraway of NCHS, Kenner Bye and Michael Kimmell of BHS and West’s Trey Frost.
Defensive backs on the first team were West’s Brown and Camp, BHS’ Surya Singh and NCHS’ Anton Cassell and Aiden Boundy. Kimmell also appeared on the first team at punter.
Offensive second team choices included linemen Espindola and Ty Upton of West, backs Cameron Smith of BHS and Jrue Mangruem of West and kick returner Gary.
Part of the second team defense were NCHS lineman Kaden Maas, West linebacker Briar Leenerman and NCHS back Blake Potts.
Receiving offensive honorable mention were NCHS linemen Reid Johnson and Bradyn Mazanowski, BHS receiver Keyontae Hamilton, West receiver Maddux Lawson and West back Josiah Edmonson.
Making defensive honorable mention were West linemen Charlie Moore and Lerenz Higgins and West linebacker Anthony Connal.
West placed five players and NCHS four on the first team of the all-Big 12 volleyball squad.
First teamers were West’s Sydnie Hernandez, Reanne Cupples, Ellie Rink, Avery Feltes and Olivia Ziemer along with Olivia Price, Addie Snoeyink, Erin Brandt and Alana Whitfield of NCHS.
Area players on the second team were Brynn Hoder and Lauren Shuey of BHS, West’s Natalie Nenne and NCHS’ Maggie Michaels.
Area players voted to the all-Big 12 first team were Chase Dwinal, Cassius Sharp and Dillon Tierny of NCHS and West’s Zach Rumps and Shane Fish.
Second team members included Samy Mukendi of BHS, Parker Michels, Kai Wilson, Gabe Jimenez, Kale Hunt and JC Crowder of NCHS and Jackson Ewing and Tyler Mora of West.
Area honorable mention picks were BHS’ Matteo Sangucho and Brody Spera and Alex Nord of West.
