North Fort Myers man grateful to be alive after home engulfed in flames A North Fort Myers man is grateful to be alive after his home caught fire Friday. Greg Anderson said he was sleeping in his home on Sandy Point Drive on Friday around midnight when he heard the smoke alarm go off. "I got up, and the whole front of the carport was just one big ball of flame," he said. "It didn't take long at all." He described the experience as scary and horrid. He said the North Fort Myers Fire District confirmed it started from his golf cart batteries catching fire. However, he said they weren't the typical flammable lithium batteries, just regular car batteries. "I used to be in this business," Anderson said. "I used to be in fire and safety all my life, so I thought I was doing everything right. Things happen."The home is no longer liveable. Ashes cover memories, like pictures of family. Anderson said he's staying with friends until he figures out what's next. His message is to make sure your smoke detectors work and store all of your flammables where they should be.
