Bob Heilman, Jordan Road, North Whitehall Township, hired Paul Burkholder Building Recyclers, Kutztown, to dismantle and resell the lumber from his barn on Sept. 16.

According to Heilman, the township said the barn was too close to the road to allow safe passage of emergency vehicles and routine traffic.

He was not sure when the barn was built but the house was built in 1818, which would probably have included the barn.

Demolition was undertaken by Zimmerman's Demolition, Bowmansville, Lancaster County, using a boom lift and hand tools to dismantle the barn.

The lumber was then loaded on a flatbed truck provided by Burkholder Building Recyclers to be resold in the building market where it can find its way into flooring, interior walls and other uses for the weather aged wood.
