ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A two-day event aimed at educating the community on substance use disorders and celebrating folks in recovery took shape in Rochester Friday.

The New York State Alliance of Recovery Residences hosted its third annual conference, which also focuses on increasing addiction recovery housing.

"When we talk about, you know, helping people with substance use disorders we want to make sure that we're looking at the whole picture and treating them as a whole person," said Lauren McNamara, the vice president of the New York State Alliance of Recovery Residences.

Leaders emphasized the importance of these recovery homes, describing them as safe, drug-free and family-like living spaces meant for people in recovery from substance abuse disorder.

The statewide event gathered more than 200 people for the conference in Rochester Friday. Organizers said access to this kind of quality housing is an important part of the recovery process.

"When we talk about saving an individual's life, it has a ripple effect in a positive way, and not just in this community but in other communities as well," said Van Smith, the founder of Recovery Housing of Rochester.

Saturday, a free community celebration will be held in honor of those both recovering and recovered. It'll be complete with music and food. It runs from two to four at Washington Square Park. Registration for the celebration is not necessary.
