Officer-related shooting in Yellowstone results in death

An exchange of gunfire between law enforcement and an individual at Canyon Village in Yellowstone National Park this morning resulted in the death of the individual and an injured park ranger.

According to the National Park Service, rangers responded to a report of an individual who was in possession of a firearm and making threats.

"When rangers contacted the individual there was an exchange of gunfire between the subject and law enforcement rangers," the release said.

The park service has not released the identity of the person who died.

The incident occurred overnight and into the morning of the Fourth of July. Currently, there are no active threats to the public.

The park ranger who was injured is being treated at a nearby hospital, according to the FBI. The FBI is leading the investigation and National Park Service special agents are supporting, the press release said.

Details are still under investigation, it added, and there is no other information available at this time.
