Ohio group refilling regional waterways with this endangered fish
An Ohio group is looking to reintroduce lake sturgeon to Lake Erie and surrounding waterways.
The Ohio Division of Wildlife is placing 60 juvenile lake sturgeon with implanted transmitters into the Cuyahoga River.

According to the division, it's part of a pilot program to help reintroduce the endangered fish into the waterways.
And while the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission isn't doing the same in Erie, they're hopeful programs like this can help make lake sturgeon plentiful once again all throughout Lake Erie.

"We saw a bunch of fish pass in 2001 due to the botulism outbreak, and ever since then, there's been a lot of work to reintroduce lake sturgeon back into its greatness that it was in Lake Erie. There are known populations on both ends," said Mark Haffley, unit leader of Lake Erie Research Unit, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. "Having lake sturgeon back in any sort of number is going to be really great for the ecosystem."
Haffley added Erie isn't a hotbed for sturgeon reproduction these days, but there have been reports of the fish surrounding Erie for years.
