Omaha Street School teacher accused of third-degree sexual abuse involving student
A part-time teacher at the Omaha Street School has been charged with third-degree sexual abuse by a school employee after he allegedly instigated an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old student, according to court documents.
Montel Jones Jr., 20, was arrested this month on allegations that he engaged in a "pattern of conduct with the intent to subject" a student to sexual abuse. Though he is not accused of physical abuse, he allegedly took the student on outings and repeatedly messaged her on social media in a sexually suggestive manner.
According to an arrest affidavit for Jones, he was hired at the Omaha Street School in August as a part-time instructor. The school is a small, faith-based alternative school for at-risk students who struggle in traditional settings.
The investigation into Jones began after the mother of the 16-year-old girl noticed concerning Instagram messages between Jones, who she recognized as a teacher at her daughter's school, and her daughter. The messages included plans for Jones to take the girl to his house for a "quickie" and other sexually suggestive content, according to the affidavit, leading the girl's mother to call police.
When interviewed, the girl said that Jones had "jokingly" discussed her performing sex acts on him for money while she was in his classroom in mid-October. On Instagram, according to the girl, they discussed plans to meet up for sex.
On a separate occasion, Jones allegedly invited the girl to Topgolf under the guise of a school outing. When she arrived, she realized she was the only student invited.
The girl said her mom discovered the messages before anything physical occurred between her and Jones. A representative with the Omaha Street School did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Jones' employment status.
Jones posted 10% of $100,000 bail and was released from custody last week. He is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing Dec. 20.
