JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — There's been a rise in school threats across the country and some are happening in Eastern North Carolina.

Onslow County Sheriff Chris Thomas said a post outlining a possible plan of a threat has been going around social media for more than a week.

He said they put out a statement Wednesday, letting the public know they've looked into it and it's not credible.

Sheriff Thomas said this particular threat has been posted online before and is circulating again. "We investigate if we can identify who posted it or who shared a threat or made a statement that it was perceived as a threat, we investigate to determine if the individual is making a comment out of anger, or is actually a potential threat to the schools for a mass violence situation," he said.

Students in Onslow County can report any threats anonymously through the Say Something App. Sheriff Thomas also encourages parents to contact law enforcement if their child mentions any possible threat, no matter how big or small.
