Orbán tells pro-Russian journalist he wants Peace Summit with Ukraine and Russia

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán intends to organise a Peace Summit between Ukraine and Russia based on a so-called peace initiative launched by China and Brazil.

Viktor Orbán in an interview with Roger Köppel, a pro-Russian journalist, editor-in-chief and publisher of Swiss weekly magazine Die Weltwoche; European Pravda

Details: Orbán said he had held "intensive talks" with China and Brazil on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York about organising a "Peace Summit between Zelenskyy and Putin".

The interview suggests that the summit will be organised as part of the foundation conference of "Friends of Peace", the name given by Beijing and Brazil to the countries that have joined their "peace initiative" at the UN.

Quote from Köppel: "We are currently negotiating a venue for the peace summit. France and Switzerland will be participating in addition to Hungary, China and Brazil."

Köppel consistently defends Putin in his publication, and he was a guest on the German-language version of Russian propaganda broadcaster RT several times before it was closed down.

In 2023, Köppel travelled to Russia, where he conducted a fawning interview with propagandist Vladimir Solovyov and Maria Lvova-Belova, Russian Commissioner for Children's Rights, who, along with Putin, is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes.

Background:

  • Hungary and Switzerland have announced their support for the Sino-Brazilian '"peace initiative".

  • This initiative, announced in May 2024, consists of a set of six points that make no mention of the UN Charter or Ukraine's territorial integrity. Instead, it calls for "the cessation of hostilities, non-escalation of the conflict, and its non-proliferation to new territories."

  • As part of his self-proclaimed "peace mission", the Hungarian prime minister travelled to Moscow and spoke with Vladimir Putin, causing an outcry in the EU.

  • Orbán announced new "peacekeeping" steps in early September.
