A group at Widener University Commonwealth Law School in Susquehanna Township has launched a donation-based initiative designed to provide students with free access to professional attire.

Phi Alpha Delta, a legal fraternity, opened the PAD Professional Closet on Oct. 23 at the student organization building on the law school's campus.

The school says that the PAD Professional Closet aims to address a critical need for law students who require proper business attire for interviews, externships, and networking events as they prepare for future legal careers.

The school says that 90% of its 2024 entering class are first-generation law school students, and 32% are first-generation college graduates.

"We understand the financial challenges many law students face, and we hope that by offering professional clothing, we can alleviate some of that burden and ensure every student has the opportunity to present themselves with confidence in professional settings," Kira Meager, a third-year law student and the treasurer of Phi Alpha Delta, said in a news release.

Phi Alpha Delta is seeking donations of new or gently used business attire including suits, blouses, dress shirts, slacks, skirts, ties, and shoes. Donations can be dropped off at the student organization building on-campus at 3805 Vartan Way or at the Dauphin County Bar Association at 213 N. Front St. in Harrisburg between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on weekdays.

"Every donation, whether it's a single item or a full outfit, has the potential to impact a student's journey to success. It's not just about clothing — it's about empowering students with the tools they need to take the next step in their careers," Meager said.
