SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A male Pallas'cat was born in late July at the Great Plains Zoo, the zoo said in a Friday news release.

The kitten was born to mom Salkhi, 7, and dad Kaz, 6.

The kitten is the second offspring for both parents. Pallas' cats are considered near threatened. The zoo received the parents through the Pallas' Cat Species Survival Program.

The zoo said in the release that the Pallas' cats have not been in the exhibit since the birth of the kitten. The mother will raise the kitten because the males are not involved in the rearing. Kaz has been temporarily moved to a behind-the-scenes habitat.

Typically, kittens spend a lot of time indoors early in their growth. But the news release said it could be possible his mom will carry him outside or that the kitten may wander out on his own.
