"After decades of struggles and challenges to secure suitable capital to save and restore this rapidly deteriorating iconic historic asset, we are gratified to turn this property over, accompanied with all the Kentucky Heritage Council's protective restrictions, along with our own special provisions, to someone with the same passion for preservation, one who possesses a great admiration for Dr. Polk and his life's story, and one who has the means and capacity to restore these structures and promote Perryville and its history on the world's stage," Main Street Perryville wrote on Facebook.

Dr. Jefferson Polk (1802-1881) established his small office next door to a home on Merchant's Row in Perryville in 1840, according to the Perryville Civil War Battlefield website. He ran a prominent medical practice and helped the community treat Union and Confederate soldiers wounded during the Battle of Perryville in 1862.
