Two prominent local unions, the United Teachers of Pasadena and Teamsters Local 911, have endorsed Measures R and EE, upcoming ballot initiatives that aim to provide funding for local schools in Pasadena, Altadena, and Sierra Madre.

The United Teachers of Pasadena, representing over 800 educators, and Teamsters Local 911, representing PUSD classified employees, announced their support for the measures this week. Proponents argue the initiatives will provide the resources needed for a comprehensive upgrade of school facilities, technology, and support for educators.

"The proposed parcel measure and school bond will hopefully provide much-needed resources for teachers and students to be able to compensate highly qualified educators so that PUSD can retain and attract the best and brightest from our surrounding area, fund essential programs that directly benefit students, provide technology enhancements, and facility upgrades that bring our schools and classrooms into the 21st century that directly benefit our students and community," said Jonathan Gardner, President of United Teachers of Pasadena.

According to supporters, Measures R and EE are critical in "modernizing school facilities, upgrading technology, and supporting teachers with essential resources to deliver world-class education." Union representatives said these improvements are vital for meeting the demands of 21st-century education.

Despite union support, some community members have raised concerns about the measures. A group known as Pasadena, Altadena, and Sierra Madre Voters for School Reform 2024 – No on Measures EE and R – opposes the initiatives, arguing that Pasadena Unified already spends more per student than most California districts without achieving better outcomes.

Opponents specifically mention Measure O, a tax measure passed in 2020, stating that its funds "remain significantly unissued or unspent." This history, they argue, warrants scrutiny before more taxpayer money is allocated through new measures.
