A woman was killed early Saturday morning as she tried to walk across Route 17 and was hit by two vehicles, police in Paramus said.

Local police responded to a report of a person being struck by a vehicle on Route 17 at about 3:30 a.m., officials said.

The woman, described to be in her 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Her name has not been released.

She successfully crossed the northbound side of the highway before crossing the median and entering into the southbound lanes, according to police.

As she tried to cross the southbound lanes, the woman was hit by one vehicle in the middle lane driven by a 42-year-old motorist and was then hit again by a tractor-trailer driven by a 65-year-old, police said.

The Paramus Police Department and Bergen County Sheriff's Department Criminal Investigation Bureau are investigating the incident.

Authorities did not provide additional details Saturday morning.
