Peoria Budget Clears without property tax break or grocery tax

N.Nguyen5 hr ago
PEORIA ( 25News Now ) -Peoria won't get a property tax break in the budget just passed by City Council Tuesday night.

At just over $288 million dollars, the budget includes more than $43 million for employee benefits and pensions.

The finance director had earlier said $65 million would go to infrastructure projects like roads and sewers.

And it also includes taking in 7.8 % more in total property taxes collected, based on higher property values.

Council members in October had talked about keeping the property tax levy flat going into the new year.

But that vote failed last month.

Last month council talked about adding a city tax on groceries, to replace the state's 1 % levy that expires in 2026.

But there was no talk of that tax.

The garbage and sewer fees also will not go up in 2025.
