Peoria teen sentenced to time served, probation in connection with 2023 shooting
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A 17-year-old boy was sentenced to time served and 30 months of probation in connection with a Nov. 9, 2023, shooting near Manual High School .
Jimichael Brown, who was 16 at the time of the shooting, pleaded guilty on Oct. 28 in Peoria County Circuit Court to aggravated battery. In return, a more serious version of aggravated battery, one that alleges use of a firearm, was dropped.
The new charge does not mention firearms. Rather, it says only that he caused great bodily harm to the victim.
The effect of that plea, said his attorney Chandra Justice of Peoria, was that instead of a mandatory prison sentence of at least six years and possibly up to 30 years, her client faced a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Probation was also an option.
Brown has been in custody for nearly a year at the county's Juvenile Detention Center, according to online court records. This was an automatic transfer to adult court due to his age and the nature of the crime.
He was charged charged in connection with the shooting of a 17-year-old who was walking to school on Nov. 9, 2023, in the 2300 block of West Ann Street.
Manual High School was put on a soft lockdown and no one inside the building was injured. The initial investigation shows that a 2003 Toyota Echo and a steel door to the school had been struck during the shooting, according to a report filed Wednesday at the Peoria Police Department .
