LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - A DeWitt fifth grader rose to the challenge set forth by the NFL and is now headed to The Big Easy for Super Bowl LIX.

Roman Lopez, 9, was awarded two tickets to the game as part of the American Heart Association's Kids Heart Challenge program in collaboration with the NFL and Detroit Lions.

Lopez, who attends Herbison Woods Elementary, is one of five winners selected from across the nation.

He was surprised at school with the tickets along with a swag bag from the Lions.

Program support from the NFL includes a video featuring Damar Hamlin, the Buffalo Bills safety who survived cardiac arrest during a Monday Night Football game in Cincinnati in January 2023.

In Hamlin's video, which plays ahead of the Kids Heart Challenge Hands-Only CPR online learning module, he shares how CPR performed by staff at Paycor Stadium within seconds of the hit saved his life and encourages kids to learn the lifesaving skill.

Each student who completed the online learning module earned an entry for the tickets.

"The collaboration with the NFL is the Association's most recent demonstration of the vow to CPR education with the commitment to double survival rates of cardiac emergencies by 2030," the American Heart Association of West Michigan said in a statement. "With nearly 3 out of 4 cardiac arrests outside of the hospital occurring in homes, knowing how to perform CPR is critically important."
