PLAINS TWP. – A Wilkes-Barre man was stabbed three times during an altercation that occurred early Sunday morning at the Diablo’s nightclub and might be gang-related, police reported.
Lamar Bobbett, 21, was taken by acquaintances to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital after he was stabbed twice in the chest and once in the right thigh and sliced above his left eye, police said. He is in stable condition.
Police were called to the scene just after 5 a.m. on Sunday and received conflicting accounts of the incident regarding whether it happened inside or outside the club.
“We have conflicting stories. ... Which maybe there was two separate incidents,” said township police Officer Dale Binker.
He said he was told that after the stabbing, Bobbett and his acquaintances went to the Denny’s restaurant in Wilkes-Barre to confront the suspected stabber.

MAHANOY TWP. – State police believe a Mountain Top man robbed a Schuylkill County gas station while brandishing a gun early Sunday morning.
Around 6:30 a.m., David George Powell III, 18, walked into the PSS Oil Company Shell Station, 1320 Morea Road, and demanded money from the attendant, police reported. She gave him between $300 and $350 from the register.
Powell and an unidentified suspect, who didn’t enter the station, then fled on foot westward along Morea Road.
The attendant and a witness, who recognized Powell from the previous day at the station, both positively identified him.
Powell was charged with robbery, theft and making terroristic threats. He was arraigned and lodged at the Schuylkill County Prison for lack of $30,000 straight bail. The time, date and location of his preliminary hearing were unknown.
The witness described the other suspect as a thin, white, brown-haired male wearing light-colored sweatpants and a light shirt. Police are searching for the suspect and ask anyone with information on the incident or the suspect to call state police at 874-5300.
PLAINS TWP. – An early-morning two-vehicle crash on state Route 315 at The Woodlands Inn & Resort on Sunday resulted in several people being injured and cited for various offenses, police said.
A northbound yellow 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer driven by Louis Oberto, 19, of Hazleton slammed into a 1999 Saturn driven by Shawn Whalen, 22, of Dallas just after midnight on Sunday.
Oberto showed signs of intoxication and was arrested for driving under the influence. Police expect to also charge him with underage drinking.
Four other passengers were cited for underage drinking, including Rachel Engel, 20, of Pittston; Dante Carrell, 18, of West Hazleton; a 16-year-old Sheppton female and a 17-year-old Hazleton female.
Another passenger, Amanda Felegie, 24, of Hazleton, broke bones in her arm and was taken to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center. The Sheppton female complained of pain in her face and was also taken to a hospital. Engel received facial injuries, but refused medical treatment.
Whalen, who will be cited for not yielding the right of way to Oberto, complained of rib pain and a concussion and was taken to the hospital by family members after the accident. Passenger Casey Noreika, 22, of Dallas complained of rib pain and was taken to the hospital. Passenger Melvin Morris, 22, of Dallas wasn’t injured.
Both vehicles were severely damaged and towed.
ROSS TWP. – A fire in an apartment complex Sunday in the Sweet Valley section of Ross Township is under investigation by the state police fire marshal.
The fire started at 2:53 p.m. in the attic of a building at 5405 Main Road, according to Asst. Chief John Oley of the Sweet Valley Fire and Ambulance Company.
No one was injured in the fire that isn’t considered suspicious. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
BUTLER TWP. – State police arrested a man suspected of stealing a sport utility vehicle in Wilkes-Barre late Saturday.
According to police reports:
Joellen Dunat, of Circle Drive in Enyon, told Wilkes-Barre police at 10:25 p.m. that someone stole a black 2006 Toyota 4-Runner from outside a home in the 300 block of Coal Street.
An off-duty Luzerne County 911 dispatcher noticed a vehicle matching that description at 11:45 p.m. driving south on Interstate 81 in Butler Township.
A state police trooper from Hazleton stopped the SUV in Sugarloaf Township and arrested Matthew Stephen Jensen, 20, West Pittston.
He was charged with receiving stolen property, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, driving while operating privileges suspended or revoked and other traffic violations.
HAZLETON – Between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, a bank envelope containing $400 was taken from Milore Tire and Brake at R1099 Peace St. Anyone with information is asked to call state police at 459-3890.
WILKES-BARRE – A Wilkes-Barre man was arrested when a search of his car turned up cocaine and marijuana, police said.
According to police:
James Montgomery, 31, of Coal Street, was stopped at 2:55 a.m. Sunday by police near the intersection of Wilkes-Barre Boulevard and Coal Street.
Montgomery will be cited with possession of a controlled substance and two traffic violations.
