PORTLAND, Ore. () — A Gresham High School student was arrested Friday after allegedly taking a gun into school, authorities said.

The 17-year-old is accused of making gun threats to a pedestrian, who later notified the school, the Gresham Police Department said.

"Late this morning, a community member contacted the GHS staff, saying they had been threatened by a person with a gun," Gresham police said in a release. "The victim believed the suspect was a student at the school and had taken the weapon into the building. Staff were able to identify the student, contacted police, and moved the student to a secure area."

Police said the student cooperated with school staff and police and "admitted to being armed."

Why did Vaux's Swifts leave Chapman Elementary early?

Officers retrieved the gun from the student, who was taken into custody.

Information about the student isn't being released due to his age.

The case has been referred to juvenile court.

Gresham police said the incident is a good reminder to "speak up if you see a dangerous situation or suspicious incident, particularly at schools and other public venues."
