A homeless man remained in serious but stable condition at a hospital Thursday after being stabbed by a suspect in Santa Monica.

Officers responded to the area of Fifth Court and Broadway around 7 p.m. Wednesday regarding a person with a stab wound, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. The victim was taken to a hospital by Santa Monica Fire Department paramedics.

Detectives described the suspect as a man in his 20s with dreadlocks and a distinctive "FTP" facial tattoo.

Detectives on Thursday continued searching surrounding areas for surveillance footage that might have captured the attack. It was unclear what led up to the stabbing.

"This incident marks another unacceptable crime in the city of Santa Monica that involves the intersection of complex societal issues of homelessness, substance abuse, and dangerous weapons," according to a police statement.

"Public safety is our top priority. Our officers are committed to addressing the problems by focusing on the root causes of crime in this area and to preemptively thwart any potential future incidents."

Anyone with information regarding the assault was urged to contact the 24-hour SMPD dispatch at 310-458-8491.
