POLICE NEWS: Elkhart bicyclist dies in crash

Sep. 29—A 30-year-old Elkhart man died after his bicycle was struck by a vehicle near Edwardsburg, Michigan, at 8:55 p.m. Friday.

According to a report from the Ontwa Township Edwardsburg Police Department, Austin Carter, 30, Elkhart, was riding his bike east on U.S. 12, near Garver Lake Road, when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle. That vehicle was driven by Robert Litty, 74, Edwardsburg.

Police stated that dark clothing and no reflective lights on the bike were a factor in the crash. Carter was taken to Elkhart General Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

—A 40-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman were arrested by Goshen police at 3:51 a.m. Sunday following a traffic stop and short pursuit at Chicago Avenue and Pike Street. Goshen police reported that a vehicle was stopped for an equipment violation and the man fled on foot for a short distance before giving up. The woman, who was a passenger, was reportedly found to be in possession of methamphetamine and a hypodermic needle. Both were taken to the Elkhart County Jail.

—A 43-year-old Goshen man was arrested by Goshen police at 8:15 p.m. Friday on a charge of resisting law enforcement. According to police, officers attempted to make a traffic stop near Plymouth Avenue and South Ninth Street for a bicycle equipment violation and the bicyclist failed to stop, leading police on a short pursuit. The bicyclist was arrested and taken to the Elkhart County Jail.

—A 50-year-old Goshen man was arrested by Goshen police at 12:17 a.m. Saturday on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and resisting law enforcement. According to police, officers were investigating a report of a drunk driver in the 900 block of West Lincoln Avenue when they stopped the Goshen man. He reportedly had a blood alcohol content that was three times the legal limit and was taken to the Elkhart County Jail.

—A dog was attacked and killed by another dog in the 2600 block of Ashton Pines Drive at 8:29 a.m. Saturday, according to Goshen police. The Humane Society of Elkhart County spoke with both owners.

—A dog was attacked by a known dog near the 600 block of North Second Street at 9:29 a.m. Saturday, according to Goshen police.

—A 16-year-old girl was bitten on the hand and was taken to Goshen Hospital for treatment of minor injuries at 11:49 a.m. Saturday, according to Goshen police. The bite occurred in the 900 block of Van Gilst Drive.

THEFTS & BURGLARIES

—About $2,000 in merchandise was stolen from Ulta Beauty, 3818 Midway Road, at 2:31 p.m. Saturday, according to a Goshen police report.

—A 70-year-old Goshen woman reported to Goshen police at 6:13 p.m. Saturday that items have been missing from her apartment, located in the 400 block of East Lincoln Avenue, since April, Goshen police reported.

An act of voyeurism was reported at 7:14 p.m. Saturday at The Willows in Goshen, according to a Goshen police report.

A 29-year-old Elkhart man reported to Goshen police he was battered while at El Imperial, 113 S. Main St., by a man he did not know. Although he was injured, he refused medical treatment. The other man left the scene prior to police arrival.

A vehicle ran off the road and hit two trees in the backyard of a property in the 2600 block of Lismore Drive, Goshen, at 3:33 a.m. Sunday, according to Goshen police. The vehicle left the scene.
