A 13-year-old boy was killed early Tuesday morning in what Minneapolis police officials are calling an apparent accidental shooting.

Police Chief Brian O'Hara said the shooting occurred at a residence on the 2400 block of Ferrant Place on the city's north side around 1:30 a.m.

Police say a 14-year-old boy was handling a gun when the 13-year-old was shot. The boy died at the scene.

"The death of a child is always incredibly troubling and tragic," said O'Hara. "Our investigators will work diligently to answer the many questions we have."

Two women and other children were in the residence at the time of the shooting. Police said no one else was hurt.

The 14-year-old who handled the gun has been taken to the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center. The circumstances which led up to the shooting are under investigation.
