A popular Australian fitness influencer has suffered a medical episode before competing in New York Marathon.

Laura Henshaw, 31, was almost rushed to hospital after accidentally consuming a yoghurt which contained cashew nuts.

'I have a nut allergy and I had been drinking these prebiotic yoghurt drinks, they're high in carbohydrates,' Laura explained.

'Had a sip, I was like, let me just check it doesn't have nuts or traces, not worth risking it before the marathon. I look down and see it contains cashews. I ran to the bathroom and spat it out.'

Laura said that despite only taking one sip she later began feeling extremely ill, making her worried she would be too sick to run in the marathon .

'I almost ended up in hospital and almost did not make it to the start line. Because I took such a big mouthful, some of it had gone down my throat, I started to feel so nauseous and later started vomiting,' she said.

Fortunately, Laura said an extra hour of sleep due to daylight savings left her feeling better in the morning and she was able to successfully complete her run in the world famous race.

'I was able to do the Marathon! We can laugh now but goodness I was so sure throughout the night I wasn't going to be able to do it. So grateful to get to the start line,' she added.

Laura married husband Dalton in November 2021 and he took her surname.

She is the co-founder of wellness brand Keep It Cleaner alongside model Steph Claire Smith.

Laura and Steph first met in the early 2010s when they were both modelling at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week not long after finishing high school.

The duo became fast friends as they worked in many of the same shows and spent much of their time backstage getting to know each other.

In 2015, the pair made a name for themselves as a dream team in fitness when they founded the health and wellness brand Keep It Cleaner, releasing an app, merch, a book and the KICPOD podcast.

Laura took on the role of the company's CEO while Steph took the COO chair, launching their brand into phenomenal success over the course of nine years.
