‘Porch pirates’ increase during holiday season

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - It’s the season of giving, and as online shopping increases, so do porch pirates. What is a porch pirate? People might not receive their Amazon, UPS or FedEx package due to someone stealing it right off their porch. Although this is an issue Lincoln Police Department sees year-round, it ramps up around the holidays. “What we see is that 17% of all of our package thefts occur during the month of November, which would make sense because that tends to be the time where people do a lot of online shopping and have a lot of stuff delivered to their home,” said Capt. Todd Kocian of LPD. According to LPD, 35 percent of these thefts occur in apartment buildings and 20 percent happen on Thursdays. LPD encourages people to track their packages online, or consider picking up the package at a drop-off site from the sender. They also recommend asking a neighbor to pick up your package for you if you know you won’t be home when it gets delivered.
