Pottsville Lions Club sends aid to hurricane survivors
POTTSVILLE — The Pottsville Lions Club has joined a Lions International initiative to aid in the recovery from the recent devastation from Hurricane Helene in North Carolina.
At a recent meeting, the club announced that it is sending a check for $500 to the Lions International Foundation Disaster Relief Fund.
Jerry Enders, Pottsville Lions Charities president, said the funds will aid recovery in Western North Carolina Lions District 311.
"We wanted to do something to help a fellow Lions Club," Enders said.
In the past, he said, the Pottsville Lions Club has participated in disaster relief efforts in Haiti.
The club, which has about 60 members, observed its 100th anniversary in September 2023.
Grace Karrer, Lions District 14-U governor, spoke to the Pottsville club at its monthly meeting in the Pottsville Zone.
Joseph Mehalko, Lions Club Charities treasurer, oversees the distribution of funds to community and charitable organizations.
Earlier this year, the Pottsville club awarded scholarships to students from Nativity BVM and Pottsville high schools who are enrolled in higher education for careers in the mechanical or medical fields. It also sponsored the recent Halloween parade in Pottsville.
The club will distribute about $3,500 to 10 area nonprofits at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 18 in the Pottsville Zone.
The club's annual Free Movie Night is set for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 5 in the Majestic Theater, Pottsville.
