Prep report: Maslowski reaches 1,000 assists for Lumberjacks

Ella Maslowski of Cloquet found a familiar face to reach a noteworthy statistical plateau on Saturday.

The Lumberjacks' senior setter dished it to her younger sister Ava for her 1,000th varsity assist during a victory against Braham at the Mora Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Maslowski now has 1,023 assists for Cloquet, which finished fifth in the 12-team field.

The Lumberjacks defeated Greenway 2-0 (25-23, 25-22), lost to host Mora 2-0 (25-18, 25-21) and claimed wins over Braham 2-1 (22-25, 25-22, 16-14) and Becker 2-0 (25-13, 25-12) to get back to the .500 mark on the season at 10-10.

Northwestern had a good day at its home tournament, the Heidi Zosel Memorial Invitational, on Saturday, Sept. 28 in Maple.

The Tigers swept pool play games against Washburn (25-17, 25-12) and Chetek-Weyerhauser (25-22, 25-12) before suffering a painfully narrow defeat to Baldwin-Woodville (25-10, 27-29, 19-17) in a marathon semifinal.

Northwestern recovered to knock off Hayward 2-0 (25-22, 25-21) in the third-place match

Shelby Hessel piled up 37 kills, 16 aces and 40 kills on the day, while Jillian Kunert had a big day at the net with 22 kills and six blocks. Addi Hanson and Genna Kreuser bolstered the defense with 39 and 26 digs, respectively.

Solon Springs lost matches to Hayward (25-16, 25-16) and Turtle Lake (25-9, 25-18) in pool play and to Luck (15-25, 25-16, 15-9) in the bronze semifinal before grabbing a win over Northwood, 25-10, 23-25, 15-11, in a consolation game.

The Lumberjacks busted out in the second half, as goals two minutes apart from Max Sundquist and Hudson Snesrud kick-started a Lake Superior Conference win at Hermantown on Saturday, Sept. 28.

After a scoreless first half, Sundquist and Snesrud found the net in the 45th and 47th minutes, with Ben Schramm adding insurance about 20 minutes later.

Nolan Manion made nine saves for Hermantown, while Preston Stang stopped three shots for CEC.

Gavin Andersen's first-half goal for Rapids was canceled out by Princeton's Jaxson Olson after the break as the Thunderhawks and Tigers played to a draw on Saturday in Princeton, Minnesota.

Aubrey Pavlatos and Adeline Randall scored for the visiting Lumberjacks in a Lake Superior Conference win at Hermantown on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Cloquet-Carlton, which leads the LSC and is 12-1-1 overall, got six saves in goal from Rylee Senich to hold off the Hawks.

Lucy Bell scored a brace (two goals) as the Hunters went on the road and knocked off Section 7AA opponent North Branch.

Cayley Larsen stood tall in the net for Denfeld, making 10 saves in a shutout. The Hunters have won three games in a row.

The Greyhounds defense held the visiting Lumberjacks to just two shots on target in the second half of a home win in Duluth on Saturday.

Maggie Winesett stopped both shots after Jordin Flohaug worked the first half without incident.

East's opening goal came from Gracyn Schipper in the 29th minute before Lilly Kuettel added to the advantage about five minutes from time.

Adelynn Peterson's two-goal game led a seven-goal surge for the Thunderhaws in a shutout win at Two Harbors on Saturday.

Five other Grand Rapids players scored and the Thunderhawks did not allow a shot on target.

A pair of first-half goals from the visitors created a hole too deep for the Hilltoppers to get out of on their home field in Duluth on Saturday.

N/SS got three first-quarter touchdown runs from Jared Schultz for another dominating victory on Friday night, Sept. 27 over the Granite Diggers.

Schultz scored from 45, 2, and 32 yards in the early going, then added another rushing score and two touchdown passes in the third as N/SS (5-0) went to halftime up 56-0.

Schultz ended up 6-for-11 passing for 100 yards and ran for 126 on six carries.
