The National Weather Service said a storm will bring "soaking rain" and gusty winds to Virginia this week.
The National Weather Service and AccuWeather are predicting a pre-Thanksgiving storm will arrive in D.C. and Virginia just in time for travelers to get on the road, or head to the airport to catch a flight.
The greatest travel problems associated with the storm will be from Tuesday to Tuesday night in the mid-Atlantic region, with some weather-related travel issues lingering into Wednesday, AccuWeather meteorologists said.
"The stiff east-to-southeast winds averaging 25-35 mph with gusts of 40-45 mph can pose a problem at some of the airports from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia and New York City with the worst conditions likely from late Tuesday afternoon to Tuesday evening," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tom Kines said.
Airline delays are most likely during this time due to winds, drenching rain and poor visibility, according to AccuWeather . Those heading to the airport should doublecheck their flights, as delays or cancellations could be possible.
Forecasters said the storm will bring "widespread, soaking rain" to the region.
Rains will begin in northern Virginia around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, the National Weather Service predicts. Precipitation is expected throughout the region, with up to three-quarters of an inch of rain throughout the day. Easterly wind gusts up to 28 miles per hour are also possible.
The rain will continue into the early hours of Wednesday morning, forecasters said. The storm could bring up to 2 inches of rain before subsiding on Wednesday.
Conditions should drive up by Wednesday afternoon, and temperatures will be slightly warmer.
The National Weather Service has also issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the western parts of our region. Experts said there could be ice accumulation on Tuesday night.
