‘Pretty nuts’: Police looking for suspect who stole over $5K in checks from Golden church

GOLDEN, Colo. (KDVR) — The search is on for a woman accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of checks from a Golden church's mailbox. It happened at Hillside Community Church at the intersection of Ford and First Streets. The Golden Police Department and Metro Denver Crime Stoppers said the recent burglaries happened between August and October. Investigation finds Douglas County Sheriff, others violated law in union election process "Tough times for people I guess," said Brian, a nearby neighbor. "People do crazy things." Neighbors were in disbelief learning of the recent church burglaries. "Pretty nuts stealing from a church," said Brian. Police say the woman pictured here stole multiple checks totaling more than $5,000 from the Hillside Community Church's mailbox. After the theft surveillance footage revealed the suspect returning several times throughout the month of October to burglarize the church's mailbox. A crime stoppers alert describes the woman as a white or Hispanic female, approximately 30-40 years old with brown hair and an average build. Surveillance cameras captured her arriving in a dark Chrysler minivan driven by a person not visible on camera. Racist texts received in Colorado investigated by FBI, Denver police "Better empty my mailbox more often I guess. It's pretty nuts," said Brian. Neighbors say they knew something was wrong when they saw church officials putting out more cameras surrounding the church. Michael Grimm, a New York Republican who resigned from Congress following a tax fraud conviction, is paralyzed from the chest down after being thrown from a horse during a polo tournament, according to friends who are raising funds to pay for the ex-lawmaker's medical care. Grimm, 54, suffered the devastating injury in September and is now being treated at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey, where the late actor Christopher Reeve was treated after a similar equestrian accident in 1995, according to Vincent Ignizio, a friend of Grimm's who is a former New York City Council member. "It was a passion of his and he suffered a tragic accident at the end of September," said Ignizio, who has set up a GoFundMe account to pay for Grimm's medical care.
